Scarlet Raiders Sweep Past New Jersey City, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark notched its first New Jersey Athletic Conference win of the season with a 3-0 decision over New Jersey City in The Golden Dome.  Set scores were 25-11, 25-11, 25-23.

Senior middle blocker Rachel Witt was the only player in double digits in points with 14 and kills with a dozen as the Scarlet Raiders (10-9, NJAC 1-3) used a fast start to down the Gothic Knights (4-9, NAJC 0-4).  Witt hit .440 (12 kills, 1 error, 25 attacks) and add a pair of aces plus nine digs.

Junior outside hitter Ula Nieznalska totaled seven kills, an ace, two assisted blocks and a team-high 18 digs while freshman middle blocker Sharee Gordon notched six kills, a solo block and two assisted blocks as the Raiders won their fourth straight match - their longest winning streak of the season.

Junior setter Jen Mendoza tallied 28 assists while adding an ace and a dozen digs for Rutgers-Newark.  Senior right side Stephanie Touzan and junior outside hitter Paulina Walega posted five kills each with Walega coming up with 13 digs and a flawless night while handling 13 service receptions.

Sophomore middle blocker Jade Medley paced NJCU with six kills and a solo block while sophomore outside hitter Marissa Scarpa contributed four kills, two aces and 14 digs.  Senior Brittany Erezuma and sophomore Indigo Hatcher put down five kills apiece for the Gothic Knights while senior setter Kiara Martinez chalked up 22 assists and a pair of aces.  Sophomore libero Cindy Garcia had a match-high 23 digs.

The Raiders stormed to the early lead as Witt hammered down seven kills on 15 swings without an error in the opening games.

The Gothic Knights rallied from a 10-5 deficit to knot the score at 21-21 in the third set.  Medley had five kills and a solo block in the frame.  Witt notched the Raiders' final three points with kills to stave off the challenge.

Rutgers-Newark is at William Paterson on Tuesday for another NJAC fray.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. in the WPU Rec Center.
