MONTCLAIR, NJ – Rutgers-Newark fell to unbeaten Montclair State, 67-36, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in the Panzer Athletic Center.
Sophomore center
Jade Howard paced the Scarlet Raiders (4-2, NJAC 2-1) with 11 points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals, but the Red Hawks (5-0, NJAC 3-0) used swarming defense to force 32 Rutgers-Newark turnovers while dominating the rebounding, 46-27.
Junior forward
Jewell Palmer added nine points and four rebounds for the Raiders while junior forward
Jasmine Daniels tallied five steals, three assists and four rebounds. Sophomore forward
Yvonne Breland came off the bench to nail two of three 3-point attempts for six points while rookie guard
Maria Simmons totaled five points and four assists.
Junior guard Nicosia Henry led MSU with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals while sophomore forward Melissa Tobie contributed a dozen points, seven rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
The Red Hawks raced out to an 11-0 lead during the first 2:35 of the game with Henry helping fuel the rally with a pair of inside buckets. A free throw by Palmer trimmed the Raider deficit to 16-9 with 12:47 left in the half, but MSU pulled away to a 38-21 halftime edge.
Howard piled up 11 points, six rebounds and both of her blocked shots in the first half to keep the Raiders in the fray until MSU closed out the period with a 15-3 run.
The loss snapped a 3-game winning streak by Raiders.
