Scarlet Raiders Fall To Ramapo In Key NJAC Game, 85-74

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark guards Pedro Burgos and Al'Don Muhammad combined for 42 points, but Ramapo posted an 85-74 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in The Golden Dome to set up a do-or-die regular season final game for the Scarlet Raiders.

Senior Burgos netted 22 points while junior point guard Muhammad scored 20 points while dishing off a game-high eight assists, but the Scarlet Raiders (13-11, NJAC 6-6) slipped into a fourth-place tie in the NJAC's rugged North Division while the Roadrunners (16-7, NJAC 7-5) jumped into a second place tie with one league game remaining.

Rutgers-Newark travels to New Jersey City (17-6, NJAC 7-5) on Wednesday while Ramapo hosts Montclair State (16-8, NJAC 6-6).  A Raider win coupled with a Ramapo victory would boost Rutgers-Newark into the third and final slot from the North Division in the 6-team NJAC playoffs.

Senior forward Jeremiah Rivers posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Raiders who also got 11 points, six rebounds and a game-high five steals from freshman swingman Christian Garcia.  Senior guard Greg Moore chipped in six points and six rebounds.

Starters scored 81 points for the Roadrunners with junior forward Stephon Treadwell getting a game-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and junior guard Will Sanborn scoring 22.  Junior guard Garret Thiel had a double-double with 15 points, a team-high 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals while Demetrius Boards worked inside for 11 points and six rebounds.  Junior guard Jermaine Emanuel added nine points and a team-high five assists.

Thiel and Sanborn had treys as Ramapo out-scored the Raiders 8-2 during the final 3:30 of the first half to take a 38-29 lead into the break.  Treadwell had a dozen points in the first 20 minutes to offset 10 points off the bench by Garcia.

Burgos went on a one-man 7-2 rally to start the second half with a pair of free throws, a jumper and a 3-pointer to make trim the Raider deficit to 40-36.  A pair of free throws by Muhammad made it 51-48 with 11:36 left, but Ramapo would never give up the lead.

Sanborn had five points, Treadwell converted a traditional 3-point play and Thiel dropped in a pair of free throws was the Roadrunners reeled off 10 straight points to take a 61-48 lead with 8:45 left.  Rutgers-Newark pulled to within nine three times down the stretch.

On Wednesday, the women's game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 8 in New Jersey City's Moore Athletic and Fitness Center.
