NEWARK, NJ - Senior guard
Kendra Johnson poured in 30 points as Rutgers-Newark pressed its way past Ramapo, 71-55, to secure a New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament berth in The Golden Dome.
Johnson matched her career high in points while adding three assists and three steals as the Scarlet Raiders (16-7, NJAC 7-5) forced 30 Roadrunners turnovers.
Sophomore guard
ShaQuanna Marshall added 16 points, four assists and three steals while sophomore forward
Jasmine Daniels tallied a dozen points, seven rebounds and three steals. Senior forward
Brittany Smith came off the bench for six points, six rebounds, two assists and a game-high six steals.
Junior forward Alexa Ryan came off the bench to pace Ramapo (15-9, NJAC 5-7) with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Johnson, who netted 17 points in the second half, had a steal and a layup with 12:02 left to boost the Raiders into a 51-25 lead. The Roadrunners got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
The Raiders earned an NJAC playoff berth for the seventh time in the last eight seasons under head coach
Kevin Morris. The 16 victories tie for the second most wins in a season by a Morris team at R-N. Last year's team went 19-10.
Rutgers-Newark visits New Jersey City for the regular-season ending NJAC doubleheader on Wednesday. The women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8.
The NJAC tournament begins on February 18 at a site and time to be determined.
