Scarlet Raiders Still Have Something To Gain On Wednesday

RUTGERS-NEWARK WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Kevin Morris
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark is guaranteed a berth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament going into Wednesday night's regular-season finale at New Jersey City – but there could still be something to gain with a victory.

The Scarlet Raiders (16-7, NJAC 7-5) could get a home game on Saturday in the playoff's opening round with a win over the Gothic Knights (4-20, NJC 0-12) coupled with a Ramapo (15-9, NJC 5-7) upset of Montclair State (17-7, NJAC 8-4) in Mahwah.

Eleventh-year head coach Kevin Morris has his team headed to the NJAC playoffs for the seventh time in the last eight years – and he's hoping for just the second home court start in the tournament in the program's history.

Last season, the Raiders downed The College of New Jersey in The Golden Dome in the opening round before shocking nationally-ranked Kean, 54-51, in the semifinals to advance to the first championship game showing in the program's history.  William Paterson stopped Rutgers-Newark, 63-49, in the title game.

Senior guard Kendra Johnson had a game-high 23 points and four steals while senior forward Lori Nieves added 11 points and six assists as the Raiders forced 32 turnovers in a 77-39 win over NJCU on January 25 in The Golden Dome Arena.

If Ramapo pulls off the upset, Rutgers-Newark would host an NJAC tourney opening round game in The Golden Dome Arena at 7 p.m. on Saturday against Richard Stockton or Rowan from the NJAC South Division.  If Montclair State wins, the Raiders will travel to The College of New Jersey for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.

The MSU-Ramapo game starts at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday with the Raiders taking on the Gothic Knights at 6.  Both games will be carried via Livestats on the hosts' websites.
