Scarlet Raiders Fall To TCNJ In NJAC Opener

RUTGERS-NEWARK SOFTBALL

Kelsey Lucas
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark freshman second baseman Kelsey Lucas and junior first baseman Monica Bagan notched the only hits against The College of New Jersey ace Lauren Fitzsimmons in an 11-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference loss before rain washed away the doubleheader nightcap in the fourth inning.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Lucas dumped a single into short left field to lead off the fourth inning after Fitzsimmons had retired the first nine Scarlet Raiders in order on her way to a 5-inning, 2-hit shutout.  The senior righty struck out five while allowing no walks.

Bagan lifted a double to left centerfield to lead off the fifth for the other Rutgers-Newark (9-9, NJAC 0-1) hit.

Junior centerfielder Liz Huttner went three for three with three RBIs to pace the Lions' 12-hit attack.

Junior rightfielder Michelle Casale saved the shut out by making a diving stab of a line drive into right centerfield by Raider sophomore catcher Gabby Spinella with two outs and Lucas motoring home from second in the fourth inning.

TCNJ (12-7, NJAC 1-0) now must return to Newark to play the second game at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Kean University in an NJAC twinbill on Tuesday at 3 p.m. on Alumni Field.
