RUTGERS-NEWARK SOFTBALL

Kelsey Lucas
NEWARK, NJ – Freshman second baseman Kelsey Lucas tripled and scored Rutgers-Newark's lone run in the sixth inning as The College of New Jersey posted a 5-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference win on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

In a single game rescheduled after a Sunday rainout of the second game of a doubleheader, the Scarlet Raiders (9-12, NJAC 0-4) were on the wrong end of a second 2-hitter by Lion ace Lauren Fitzsimmons (10-2) against Rutgers-Newark in four days.

Lucas drove a shot off the middle of the left field fence with one out in the sixth and scored on a ground ball to second by junior third baseman Monica Liotto.

The only other Raider hit was a clean single to left center field by sophomore first baseman Gabby Spinella to lead off the second inning.

Sophomore right-hander Liane Drastal (4-8) settled down after yielding three runs on three hits and a walk in the first inning to cool TCNJ (15-7, NJAC 4-0).  She scattered nine hits, giving up five walks and striking out one while going the distance.

Junior second baseman Ashley Sogluizzo, who went two for three and scored twice, stroked a 2-out, 2-run double to left centerfield to ignite the Lions' first inning rally.

Freshman Katherine Cipolla delivered a 2-out, 2-run pinch-hit single to right center field in the fifth to plate the other TCNJ runs as the Lions completed the regular-series set against the Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark visits New Jersey City for an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Gerrity Athletic Complex.
