UNION, NJ – Rutgers-Newark could not penetrate the Kean defense in a 5-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference loss in Alumni Stadium.

Scarlet Raider freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Benoit recorded nine saves but the Cougars (6-1-0, NJAC 1-0-0) piled up a 26-6 advantage in shots and got a 4-save shutout from goalkeeper Samantha Blair.

Senior forward Carly Seidel netted two of the Cougars' three first-half goals as Kean out-shot the Raiders, 14-1, in the opening period.  Senior midfielder Julianna Natale posted a goal and an assist for Kean.

The Raiders were accurate, putting four of six shots on goal.  Sophomores Sarah Cunha and Janelle Vega and freshmen Mercedes Lois and Cristina Estremera each forced Blair to make a save.

Rutgers-Newark (1-6-1, NJAC 0-1-1), which tied Rutgers-Camden on Saturday in its league opener, now hosts Ramapo (3-3-0, NJAC 0-2-0) Saturday at noon on Alumni Field.
