NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark broke away from Rowan late in the opening half and rode its bench to a 65-45 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in The Golden Dome Arena.
Reserve sophomore center
Sharee Gordon helped the bench total 26 points and 19 rebounds by piling up nine points plus game highs of 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Scarlet Raiders (10-5, NJAC 5-3).
Rutgers-Newark won its second straight league game to turn the halfway mark in the NJAC season in a three-way tie for third place with Ramapo (11-4, NAJC 5-3) and William Paterson (11-5, NJAC 5-3). The top six teams earn a slot in the 9-team conference's post season championship playoff.
It marked the third win with associate head coach James Bagli calling the shots from the bench while head coach
Kevin Morris is recuperating from knee surgery follow a fall on December 30.
Junior center
Jewell Palmer tallied a team-high 15 points while adding eight rebounds and four steals as the Raiders totaled 22 points off of 30 Prof turnovers. Sophomore forward
Jade Howard, who chipped in six points and four steals, hauled down nine rebounds to help Rutgers-Newark control the boards, 51-42.
Junior forward
Jasmine Daniels added eight rebounds and six points while freshman guards
Maria Simmons and
Laura Shakiri netted nine points apiece. Junior point guard
ShaQuanna Marshall dished out a game-high four assists while adding four rebounds, three steals and three points.
Senior guard Eyandra Molina paced Rowan (4-12, NJAC 0-8) with a game-high 19 points while adding seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Bria Hill added nine points and six rebounds for the Profs.
Palmer had six points as the Raiders closed out the opening half with an 8-0 run over the final five minutes as the Profs fell into a 25-15 hole. In an icy opening period, neither team scored in the first four minutes.
In the second half, the Raiders methodically expanded the lead to 55-29 with 8:12 remaining on a second-chance jumper by Daniels. Rowan would get no closer than 16 points in the final minutes.
Rutgers-Newark is at Brooklyn College on Monday at 7 p.m. for a non-conference game before returning to NJAC play at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday.
