Scarlet Raiders Throttle Rutgers-Camden, 72-51

CAMDEN, NJ – Rutgers-Newark limited Rutgers-Camden to just 19 first-half points on its way to a 72-51 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in Rec Center.

Sophomore forward Jade Howard poured in 14 of her game-high 17 points and made five of her career-high seven steals in the first half as the Scarlet Raiders (12-5, NJAC 6-3) allowed the Scarlet Raptors (6-9, NJAC 2-7) to shoot just 22.2% (6-27) from the floor while forcing 14 turnovers to take a32-19 lead into the break.

Howard barely missed a double-double by snaring a game-high nine rebounds to pace a balanced Rutgers-Newark attack.  Junior point guard ShaQuanna Marshall knocked down five of seven shots from the floor on her way to 15 points, six steals, four assists and three rebounds.  Juniors Jasmine Daniels and Jewell Palmer netted 11 points apiece to the Raiders.  Daniels added six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Freshman guard Maria Simmons dished out a career-high nine assists for Rutgers-Newark while adding nine points, three rebounds and two steals.  Sophomore center Sharee Gordon tallied six points and five rebounds.

A dozen Raptors scored, but none reached double digits.  Freshman forward Michelle Onu came off the bench for eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while sophomore center Rachel Hodge chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.  Sophomore guard Lillian Chukwueze totaled seven points, seven rebounds and three assists while helping Rutgers-Camden control the boards, 40-33.

The Raiders won their fourth straight game to keep them in the thick of the race for one of six NJAC Championship Tournanament berths with seven league games remaining.

Rutgers-Newark hosts nationally 13th ranked and undefeated Montclair State on Saturday to kick off an NJAC doubleheader in The Golden Dome Arena.  MSU hammered Rowan, 103-36, tonight to improve to 17-0 overall and 9-0 in the conference.  The women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8.
