Defense Lifts Scarlet Raiders Past New Jersey City, 54-41

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Rutgers-Newark won a defensive struggled against New Jersey City, 54-41, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in the Moore Athletic Center.

Junior guard ShaQuanna Marshall knocked down four of six shots from beyond the arc on her way to a game-high 17 points while junior forward Jasmine Daniels hauled down a career-high 14 rebounds while adding a game-high six assists, eight points and two steals as the Scarlet Raiders (13-6, NJAC 7-4) completed a regular-season series sweep of the Gothic Knights (4-15, NJAC 1-10).

The Raiders limited an opponent to less than 50 points for the sixth time this season while piling up 33 points off 29 NJCU turnovers.

Marshall added three assists and two steals while junior center Jewell Palmer notched 10 points, three rebounds and three steals as Rutgers-Newark bounced back from a 68-48 loss to unbeaten Montclair State to take its fifth decision in its last six outings.

Sophomore point guard Ashley Vazquez paced the Gothic Knights with 13 points, three assists and three steals while senior forward Maxine Kaminski came off the bench for 11 points and four rebounds.

Marshall notched a dozen points, hitting three of four shots from 3-point range, in the second half when the Raiders pulled away from a tenuous 22-19 halftime advantage to lead by as many as 19 points.

Rutgers-Newark visits Richard Stockton on Saturday for an NJAC doubleheader.  The men's game tips off at 1 p.m. with the women to follow at 3.
