JERSEY CITY, NJ – Sophomore midfielder Cristina Estremera posted her second straight hat trick and Rutgers-Newark limited New Jersey City to four shots in a 5-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win on McNulty Memorial Field.

Estremera strung together three consecutive tallies just two days after putting in four goals in a 10-0 decision over John Jay, but the Scarlet Raider defense ruled the day.

Sophomore goalkeeper Diana Aviles needed just one save to post her fourth shutout of the season as the Raiders out-shot the Gothic Knights, 43-4. NJCU junior goalkeeper Brittany Hoffman made 20 saves to keep things relatively close. Rutgers-Newark took all five corner kicks in the contest.

Freshman forward Paige Lazar netted what proved to be the game winner just 15:21 into the fray, taking a long through pass from near midfield by senior midfielder Renae McEvoy to set up the tally from the right side of the box.

Estremera then started her run of having a hand in the next four goals when she picked up a failed clearing attempt by the Gothic Knights and hammered home a shot from 10 yards into the middle of the net. That goal gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead at the half.

A dozen minutes into the second period, freshman defender Victoria Benet sent a long through pass to Estremera on the right side which set up a shot over Hoffman to make it 3-0. Less than seven minutes later, Estremera collected a loose ball on the right side of the box and, again, lofted a shot over Hoffman.

In the 76th minute, Estremera played a ball back to the left edge of the box to junior forward Victoria Nunez who put the final goal inside the left post off the fingers of a diving Hoffman.

It marked the first NJAC shutout victory for the Raiders since they stopped New Jersey City, 2-0, on Alumni Field on September 27, 2008.

Rutgers-Newark (5-9-1, NJAC 1-4-0) hosts Rowan (12-2-0, NJAC 4-2-0) on Alumni Field Saturday night at 7:30 in another NJAC battle.
