GLASSBORO, NJ – Rutgers-Newark used defense and the scoring talents of junior forward Raphael Araujo to take a key 4-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rowan University.
Araujo had a hand in the Scarlet Raiders' first three tallies, scoring the first two to push his NCAA Division III leading total to 21 for the season, and sophomore goalkeeper Matt Broomall made five saves to notch his fifth shutout of the season.
Rutgers-Newark (13-3-1, NJAC 4-2-1) clinched a berth in the NJAC Championship playoffs with the win. They join Richard Stockon, Rutgers-Camden, Montclair State and The College of New Jersey in the six-team field with one slot yet to be decided. The Profs (8-8, NJAC 2-5) slipped into a tie for seventh place with Ramapo (6-7-2, NJAC 2-5) entering the final two weeks of the regular season.
Araujo dribbled into the box for both of his goals, putting shot each in the lower left corner past Prof goalkeeper Ryan Gill. His sixth game winning goal of the season came just 7:59 into the contest to give the Raiders a tenuous 1-0 lead at the half. In the 62nd minute, he dribbled through defenders to unleash his 21st marker.
Just over six minutes later, Araujo sent a cross to senior midfielder Brian Barrera which was ripped into the upper right corner of the goal.
Freshman midfielder Anthony DeRisi sent a corner kick to junior forward Nick Bucciero for a header into the left side of the net in the 87th minute to cap the scoring. DeRisi extended his consecutive matches with an assist streak to eight while pushing his Raider single season record for assists to 12.
Broomall earned his shutout with two spectacular plays. With the Raiders holding onto a 1-0 lead, he drove to tip a close-range free kick out of the upper left corner after Rowan's Dylan Smith curled a hard shot around the Rutgers-Newark picket line in the 34th minute. With just 21 seconds left, he stopped a penalty kick by Nick Bolton.
The Raiders manufactured a slim 12-10 edge in shots while Rowan had the advantage in corner kicks, 9-8. But Rowan goalkeepers Gill and Kevin Vasta stopped just half of Rutgers-Newark's shots on goal.
