NEW YORK – Rutgers-Newark senior guard ShaQuanna Marshall erupted for 29 points but Baruch College held off a late Scarlet Raider rally for a 64-55 non-conference win in the ARC Arena.

Marshall, who barely missed a double-double with nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, made all 10 of her free throw attempts as the Raiders (3-2) lost despite making 18 of 20 shots from the charity stripe.

Rutgers-Newark almost had three players with double-doubles as senior forward Jasmine Daniels and junior forward Jade Howard each posted 10 points and nine rebounds. Daniels had a pair of assists while Howard came up with a game-high four steals.

The Raiders shot a season-low 25.4% (17-67) for the game while the balanced Bearcats controlled the boards, 50-40.

Baruch (3-1) got 14 points, a game-high 18 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots from junior forward Sheridan Taylor. Junior guard Francess Henry paced Baruch with 19 points while adding eight rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Alicea Ulmer totaled 13 points and seven rebounds.

Marshall and Howard rallied the Raiders from a double-digit deficit in the second period to within two points. Four consecutive free throws by Marshall trimmed the Baruch lead to 55-53 with 2:54 remaining. But Ulmer scored three field goals as the Bearcats reeled off seven straight points. An Ulmer layup gave Baruch a commanding 62-53 lead with 64 seconds left.

Marshall went six of six from the line the second period and netted 17 points while Howard worked inside for 10 points, seven rebounds and all four of her steals.

After Daniels opened the scoring with a layup in the opening minute, Baruch pounded the ball inside to reel off 10 unanswered points. Sheridan dumped in four baskets in the paint before Henry capped the rally with a layup on an assist from Sheridan with just 4:27 gone in the contest. The Raiders trimmed their deficit to four points on a pair of free throws by Marshall and a layup by Daniels, but that was as close as Rutgers-Newark would get. Sheridan finished the first half with 13 rebounds and 10 points as the Bearcats carved out a 32-22 advantage.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Montclair State in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader in The Golden Dome Arena on Wednesday. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8.
