NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark managed just five hits in its New Jersey Athletic Conference opening doubleheader on Alumni Field, falling to William Paterson, 10-1 and 10-0.
After notching four hits in the first game against senior Kelsey Hand (2-2), the Scarlet Raiders were limited to one single by freshman Chelsea Batelli (3-3) in the nightcap to fall to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC.
IN THE OPENER, senior first baseman
Monica Bagan led off with a single, stole second base and came home on a two-out single to left center field by senior leftfielder
Nicole Odell in the bottom of the second. Junior second baseman
Tina Zaggia and freshman centerfielder
Krista Casale singled in the fifth inning for the other Rutgers-Newark base hits.
William Paterson exploded for six runs on seven hits in the second inning against junior right-hander
Liane Drastal (4-4). A two-run double by sophomore second baseman Christina Austin capped the outburst.
Sophomore designated player Kerrin Dys and Hand hammered back-to-back home runs to start the third inning and chase Drastal who yielded nine hits while walking one and striking out one. Junior
Brianna Alicchio came on to blank WPU until the sixth when doubles by junior shortstop Katelyn Miele and Dys sandwiched a Raider fielding error to bring in two unearned runs.
Dys went four for four to pace the Pioneers' 13-hit attack.
IN THE SECOND GAME, senior third baseman
Monica Liotto's two-out single through the left side of the infield in the first inning gave the Raiders their only base runner as Batelli struck out three in a masterful five-inning performance. No ball left the infield except for the single.
Miele went three for four with RBI singles in the two-run second and the fifth plus a two-RBI triple which keyed a five-run third inning for William Paterson. The Pioneers chalked up a dozen hits with Austin and Dys each getting a double and a single.
Alicchio (1-7) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in two innings before giving way to senior
Allie Ronchi who limited the Pioneers to one earned run on four hits over the final three innings.
Rutgers-Newark is at defending NJAC champion Montclair State while William Paterson visits Rowan on Tuesday in a pair of 3 p.m. NJAC doubleheaders.
