GLASSBORO, NJ – Rutgers-Newark scratched out just five singles as No. 11 Rowan University notched a New Jersey Athletic Conference sweep, 8-0 and 4-0, on the Rowan Softball Field.
IN THE FIRST GAME, senior third baseman
Monica Liotto, junior first baseman
Liane Drastal and junior catcher
Gabby Spinella singled in the first, second and fourth innings, respectively, off Prof senior ace LeAnne Miller (18-2). Miller struck out six and walked just one in the mercy-rule five-inning contest.
Senior first baseman Stephanie Labas hammered a grand slam to highlight a seven-run fifth inning explosion by Rowan (32-4, NJAC 13-1). Junior starter
Brianna Alicchio (2-13) had yielded only one run on five hits entering the inning. Labas chased Alicchio with her home run and senior
Allie Ronchi got two outs before a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Jess Phillips ended the game.
IN GAME TWO, Drastal (5-8) scattered a dozen hits to keep the Raiders close, but back-to-back two-out singles by senior first baseman
Monica Bagan and freshman second baseman in the second inning were the only Rutgers-Newark hits against a trio of Prof pitchers.
Labas went two for four and singled home a run in the fourth inning while sophomore rightfielder Katie Bussman went two for three with an RBI double in the two-run fifth.
The losses knock the Raiders (7-21, NJAC 2-12) out of contention for the NJAC Championship Tournament entering the final week of the regular season.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Baruch College on Sunday at 11 a.m. on Alumni Field in a non-conference twinbill before travelling to The College of New Jersey on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. NJAC doubleheader.
