UNION, NJ – Rutgers-Newark junior catcher Gabby Spinella broke up a no-hit bid in the seventh inning of game one, but Kean University rode overpowering pitching by Courtney Yard to a 4-0 and 8-0 sweep in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader on Cougar Field.

IN GAME ONE, Spinella delivered a single to right field with one away in the final inning to spoil Yard's no-hitter.  The sophomore right-hander struck out four and walked just one.

Junior Liane Drastal (4-7) suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking one.

Senior second baseman Katie Schuh went three for four for the Cougars (16-10, NJAC 4-4).

IN GAME TWO, freshman second baseman Vannessa Romero double in the second inning and junior rightfielder Tori Santiago singled in the fifth – each time with two out – for the only hits against Yard in the five-inning decision.

Yard, who struck out four without yielding a walk, hammered a solo home run to center field to open the second inning for what proved to be the game-winning hit.  She went three for three and scored three times in the game.

Raider junior Brianna Alicchio (1-10) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with a strike out and one walk.

Rutgers-Newark (5-17, NJAC 0-8) travels to Old Westbury on Thursday for a 3 o'clock non-conference doubleheader before hosting New Jersey City in an NJAC twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Alumni Field.
