OLD WESTBURY, NY – Rutgers-Newark battled but could not get a win over Old Westbury in a season-ending 1-0 and 6-5 doubleheader loss in the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
IN THE SECOND GAME, junior centerfielder
Tori Santiago keyed two rallies while going three for three with three runs batted in. Santiago ripped a two-run double to cap a four-run first inning before delivering an RBI single to left field in the third to push the Scarlet Raider lead to 5-1.
Freshman second baseman
Vannessa Romero, senior third baseman
Monica Liotto and junior catcher
Gabby Spinella each went two for four as Rutgers-Newark piled up 11 hits.
In the first inning, back-to-back singles by Romero and Liotto came ahead of throwing error which plated the first run. Senior first baseman
Monica Bagan followed with an RBI single down the right field line before Santiago finished the outburst with a double to right center field.
In the third, Spinella singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bagan, advanced to third on a ground ball to the right side by junior
Liane Drastal and scored on Santiago's hit. But Rutgers-Newark (10-28) would not get another run against the Panthers (19-17).
Senior right-hander
Allie Ronchi carried the Raiders into the sixth inning with a 5-4 lead before getting into trouble. After hitting the lead-off batter and giving up a one-out double to put runners on the corners, Drastal took over. Ronchi scattered six hits while walking two and striking out no one.
Junior second baseman Samantha Howley, the first batter that Drastal faced, singled through the middle to knot the score at 5-5 before a defensive gem by rightfielder
Tina Zaggia got the Raiders out of the jam. Zaggia gathered in a fly ball and fired to the plate for an inning-ending double play.
But after the Raiders went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, an error by Zaggia put senior shortstop Nicole Petrucci on second before centerfielder Jennifer Jean singled her home with the winning run.
IN GAME ONE, junior left-hander
Brianna Alicchio (3-17) lost a pitchers' duel against Old Westbury senior Alyssa Clancy (18-16).
Alicchio gave up just five hits while striking out three and walking no one while Clancy allowed just four just while striking out eight.
Consecutive two-out singles by Petrucci, senior rightfielder Alex Heaney and sophomore catcher Corrine Protasiewicz in the third inning produced the game's only run. Alicchio allowed just eight baserunners while Clancy limited the Raiders to five.
Liotto had two of the Raider hits, including a first-inning double which was the only extra-base hit of the game. Romero singled in the fourth and senior leftfielder
Nicole Odell singled in the fifth for the other Rutgers-Newark hits.
