PATCHOGUE, NY – For the second straight match, Rutgers-Newark erupted for five first-half goals on its way to a 6-1 decision over St. Joseph's LI in Danzi Stadium.
Junior forward Raphael Araujo netted a pair of goals while senior forward Daniel Naranjo contributed a goal and an assist to the onslaught which gave the Scarlet Raiders (5-1-0) their fifth straight victory. Also scoring for the Raiders were freshmen Anthony DeRisi and Dylan Elias in the first period and rookie Hubert Dul in the second half to stake Rutgers-Newark to a 6-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Broomall lost his bid for a third shutout victory of the season when Golden Eagles' junior midfielder Chris Hall scored an unassisted goal in the 87th minute. Broomall made four saves while St. Joseph sophomore Niko Petratos recorded five stops.
Araujo netted the first goal on an assist from senior Brian Barrera in the sixth minute before Naranjo fed DeRisi in the 16th for what proved to be the game winner. Araujo, Naranjo and Elias followed with unassisted goals over the next 16 minutes as the Raiders scored five times on just eight first-half shots.
In the second half, Dul put away a goal on an assist from junior Nick Bucciero to snap a gap of over 38 minutes without a tally as Scarlet Raider head coach Kevin East used 26 field players in the contest.
Rutgers-Newark forged a 16-8 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The first-half scoring explosion came just three days after Rutgers-Newark scorched DeSales University for five goals in the opening 25 minutes of a 6-0 decision in the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic.
Saturday at 5 p.m. on Alumni Field, the Raiders will have a rematch with the College of Staten Island – the team which knocked top-seeded Rutgers-Newark out of the 2012 ECAC Metro Championship in the opening round on penalty kicks.
The Raiders will have another added incentive as East goes after his 200th career victory. He has piled up a 199-105-22 overall record in nine seasons at New Jersey City and seven years at Rutgers-Newark. Last fall, he became the first Scarlet Raider men's soccer coach to be named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
