Scarlet Raiders Open NJAC Play With A Loss At Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ – Rutgers-Newark let an early lead slip away in game two of a 3-0 loss to Ramapo in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for each squad in the Bradley Center.  Game scores were 29-9, 25-21, 25-14.

Freshman right side Chrissy Campanelli hammered down six kills to pace the Scarlet Raiders (4-3, NJAC 0-1) while sophomore middle blocker Sharee Gordon added three kills and two solo blocks against the Roadrunners (6-4, NJAC 1-0).

Freshman setter Emilie Pulecio recorded two of the Raiders' three aces while distributing 17 assists and rookies Adrianna Pagnotta and Christina Maglione chipped in three kills apiece.  Senior libero Paulina Walega posted a match-high 13 digs but Rutgers-Newark saw its two-match winning streak snapped.

Freshman outside hitter Rachel Selmore paced Ramapo with a dozen kills, two aces, a blocking assist and 11 digs as the Roadrunners won their third straight match.  Sophomore outside hitter Cathryn Smart delivered four of Ramapo's 11 service aces.

After Selmore had four kills and two aces as Ramapo rolled in the first frame, the Raiders battled back to take a 9-4 lead in game two.  Pulecio started the set with back-to-back aces before Campanelli had three of the Raiders' seven kills during the spree.

But, the Roadrunners caught Rutgers-Newark at 13-13 before taking the home team took the lead for good at 16-14.  Campanelli totaled five kills in the set while Maglione notched three, but Ramapo got four kills apiece from Selmore and junior middle blocker Sara Pendleton to counter the Raiders.

Smart delivered four straight aces to spark a 9-0 Ramapo run which snapped a 7-7 tie in the final game.

Rutgers-Newark is at Rowan on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for another NJAC match.
