NEWARK, NJ – Freshmen Christina Maglione and Emilie Pulecio combined for 24 points as Rutgers-Newark stormed past Centenary, 3-0, in front of a record crowd of 432 in The Golden Dome to open its season.
Outside hitter Maglione notched a match-high 13 points with eight kills, three aces and a pair of solo blocks while setter Pulecio delivered nine aces and a pair of kills to total 11 points as the Scarlet Raiders (1-0) downed the Cyclones (0-5), 25-7, 25-8, 25-14.
The stands were packed with an enthusiastic crowd with many sporting Rutgers-Newark sunglasses which were given to the first 100 students at the gate. The sunglasses giveaway will continue at Wednesday's women's and men's soccer openers on Alumni Field.
Freshman Kathy Hormaza tallied seven kills for the Raiders while rookies Chrissy Campanelli and Adrianna Pagnotta added three points apiece. Pagnotta and senior libero Paulina Walega led Rutgers-Newark with eight digs apiece.
Rutgers-Newark never trailed in the match with Pulecio roping three aces in each game.
In game one, Maglione powered the Raiders with four kills, a pair of aces and a solo block before adding two kills and a solo block in the second frame.
Hormaza had four kills and five digs in the third set as the Raiders needed just 65 minutes to complete the sweep.
Sophomore outside hitter Vanessa McKellar paced the Cyclones with three kills while junior outside hitter-libero Myriah Cockburn registered two kills, an ace and eight digs.
Rutgers-Newark visits Brooklyn College on Thursday at 6 p.m. for a non-conference match before returning to The Golden Dome on Monday to take on Cedar Crest at 7 o'clock.
