Kathy Hormaza and sophomore
Sharee Gordon combined for 25.5 points to help Rutgers-Newark down Brooklyn College, 3-1, in the West Quad Center.
The Scarlet Raiders (2-0) spoiled the Bulldogs' season opener, 25-12, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19, as Hormaza totaled eight kills, a match-high five aces and 21 digs while Gordon added a team-high 10 kills and got in on all three of Rutgers-Newark's blocks.

Adrianna Pagnotta notched eight kills, made 15 digs and delivered one of the Raiders' 10 aces. Freshmen
Chrissy Campanelli and
Emilie Pulecio served two aces apiece while coming up with 10 and 11 digs, respectively. Senior libero
Paulina Walega recorded 14 digs and handled 25 serves with just one error as the Raiders limited Brooklyn College to three service aces.
Freshman middle hitter Francesca LoCascio paced the Bulldogs with a match-high 15 kills while outside hitters Julia Bogdan and Jillian Escobar each chalked up nine kills and a service ace.
The Raiders started fast, hitting .303 (13 kills, 3 errors, 33 attacks) in game one behind eight assists by Pulecio. Hormaza, Pagnotta and Gordon had three kills apiece.
But Escobar had five kills and LoCascio, four, as Brooklyn rallied to level the match after two frames.
In game three, Hormaza and Campanelli roped two aces apiece as Rutgers-Newark seized control of the contest. A kill by freshman
Hannah Riede broke a 9-9 tie and ignited an 8-2 spurt which staked the Raiders to a 17-11 edge.
Hormaza had three kills and an ace in the fourth set as the Raiders led wire-to-wire to end the night.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Cedar Crest at 7 p.m. on Monday night in The Golden Dome before visiting Mount St. Mary on Tuesday. The Raiders also will host John Jay on Thursday.
