NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark saw its 14-match winning streak snapped 3-2 in double-overtime by Kean in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Alumni Field.

On a night when Scarlet Raider senior forward Raphael Araujo broke the school-record for goals in a career it was the Cougars who stole the thunder on a golden goal by sophomore forward Kenny Rocha with just 2:50 left in the second overtime period.

The loss snapped the longest winning streak in NCAA D-III at 14 and dropped Rutgers-Newark (14-3-0, NJAC 6-1-0) into second place in the NJAC standings behind Montclair State (13-3-0, NJAC 7-0-0) which downed Rutgers-Camden (9-7-0, NJAC 5-2-0), 5-2, earlier in the evening.  Kean (9-5-1, NJAC 4-3-0) jumped into sole possession of fourth place in the 10-team league with the upset.

Araujo scored the opening goal just 4:57 into the contest on breakaway run off of a long through pass from sophomore forward Charlie O'Connell to give him 43 markers in just his second season in Scarlet & Black.  That pushed him past the record of 42 he shared with R-N Athletic Hall of Famer Danny Lopes (1994-97).

Araujo fired a penalty kick into the lower right side of the goal at 68 minutes to stake the Raiders to a 2-1 lead that almost held up.

But senior midfielder Santiago Roncal netted his second goal of the contest with just 1:11 left in regulation for force the overtime.  Roncal had leveled the score in the 16th minute when he one-time a shot off Raider junior goalkeeper Matt Broomall who had stopped a point blank range shot by junior forward Pablo Valle off of a corner kick by Rocha.  On the Cougars' second tally, Roncal again punched in the goal after Broomall had punched away a shot on goal.  This time Broomall dove to stop a free kick from 25 yards out by junior midfielder Richard Zapata.  Rocha squeezed between a pair of Raider defenders to one-time the ball into the left side.

Kean nearly ended the match less than two minutes into the first overtime when freshman forward Sevag Kherlopian chipped a header over a charging Broomall only to see Raider junior defender Paul Tarnawski streak across the goal mouth and clear the shot out to the left side.

On the game winner, senior defender Patrick Foley collected a misplayed clearing pass near midfield and drove hard toward the right side.  He sent a crossing pass near the 18 to Rocha who hammered a low shot under a Raider defender which whistled past Broomall into the left side of the goal.

Broomall (13-3-0) posted five of his eight saves in the first half while Kean senior Nick Pavlichko made all five his stops after the opening 45 minutes.

The loss snapped the Raiders' winning streak which began after the team lost to Covenant and Emory in Atlanta during the final weekend in August.  Rutgers-Newark allowed more than one goal in a match for the first time since those season-opening losses.

The Raiders had climbed to No. 19 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA D-III Poll and No. 22 in the D3Soccer.com Top 25.

It was the Raiders' second consecutive double-overtime decision following a 2-1 NJAC win at William Paterson on Wednesday.  Those are the only extra period contests for the team this season.

Rutgers-Newark must regroup for a rugged closing stretch which starts with a non-conference battle against Stevens Tuesday night at 7:30 on Alumni Field in the NSCAA TV Small College Game of the Week.  The Raiders visit Rutgers-Camden next Saturday before hosting Senior Day against Montclair State on October 29.
