Box Score NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark head coach
Kevin East posted his 100th victory at the school as his team pushed its winning streak to a dozen with a 4-0 shutout over FDU-Florham on Alumni Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (12-2-0), who entered the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 for the first time in program history at No. 21 this week, continued their dominance since an 0-2 start in August by outshooting the Devils (2-7-3), 26-5, while piling up an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
East upped his record at Rutgers-Newark to 100-58-13 in his eighth season – a remarkable 62.3 winning percentage for a program which had posted just three winning seasons and two post-season appearances in the 18 years prior to his arrival. He raised his career record which includes nine seasons at New Jersey City to 223-124-24 (63.3 winning percentage).
Sophomore midfielder
Tyler Nowak netted two second-half goals after senior forward
Raphael Araujo had a hand in a pair of first-half tallies for the Raiders after an early red card forced FDU-Florham to play a man down for the final 80 minutes.
Junior
Matt Broomall and sophomore
Baltej Singh combined for a shutout for the second time this season. Broomall (11-2-0) stopped a shot by sophomore midfielder George Batista in the 19th minute while Singh notched a save against freshman forward Brian Chiarello in the 72nd to give the Raiders their sixth shutout during their winning streak. The other six victims managed just one goal each as Rutgers-Newark has out-scored its opponents 38-6 since August.
Araujo recorded his fifth game-winning goal in the 42nd minute when he headed a free kick from just outside the 18 by senior midfielder
Diego Moraes inside the near post from the left edge of the box.
Araujo got an assist on the back-breaking goal by freshman defender
Isaiah Kuris with just three seconds left in the opening period. Araujo headed a corner kick from the right side by freshman forward
Chigozie Atubi on goal with four ticks left. Devil freshman goalkeeper JT Bretschneider batted the ball to his right where Kuris was waiting to push it into the lower left side for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Bretschneider made five of his eight saves during the opening 45 minutes to keep FDU-Florham close despite overwhelming advantages by the Raiders in shots, 16-3, and corner kicks, 9-1.
In the second half, Tyler picked up a turnover by a Devil defender near the middle of the field, dribbled toward the left side of the goal with Araujo pacing him on the right and pushed a shot inside the left post against a helpless Bretschneider in the 59th minute. In the 62nd minute, Nowak headed in a crossing pass from the left side by freshman forward
Alex Torres for his fourth goal of the season and the final marker of the match. It was the first multi-goal game for Nowak who has scored all of his goals in the last three matches.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Richard Stockton in a key NJAC match on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on Alumni Field.
