Box Score

ALFRED, N.Y. – Rutgers University-Newark could not hold onto a third game lead as top-seeded Ramapo College swept its way to the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship finals with a 3-0 win in Alfred State's Orvis Activities Center.  Game scores were 25-14, 25-16, 27-25.

A kill by freshman outside hitter Samantha Renfree followed by a block by Renfree and freshman middle blocker Amber Borowski gave the Scarlet Raiders (17-12) a 22-16 lead in the third frame, but Ramapo went on a 7-1 run to catch Rutgers-Newark at 23-all.

The Raiders had a pair of game points at 24-23 off of a kill by Borowski and at 25-24 after an attack error by Ramapo freshman outside hitter Larysa Iwaskiw.  A kill by Roadrunner junior middle blocker Katelyn Ward spoiled the first game point before a Rutgers-Newark attack error derailed the second.  Two Raider errors then set up the match-ending kill by junior libero Emily Harris.

Freshman outside hitter Karolina Kopacz led the Raiders with nine kills, a blocking assist and seven digs.  Junior middle blocker Sharee Gordon added seven kills and got in on two of Rutgers-Newark's three blocks.

Freshman libero Sue Riley came up with a team-high 19 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Kathy Hormaza totaled 15 digs while delivering both of the Raiders' service aces.

Ward and Iwaskiw paced the Roadrunners (26-9) with 11.5 points each.  Ward dominated the net with two solo blocks and five blocking assists while adding seven kills.  Iwaskiw posted a match-high 10 kills while adding an ace and a blocking assist.

Ramapo advances to the 4 o'clock championship match against the winner of the #2 Ithaca College and #3 Alfred State semifinal match which began at 1:30 p.m.

Rutgers-Newark capped a rebound season lead by a team which was fully stocked with freshmen and sophomores except for Gordon.

All of head coach Jason Madsen's players will be eligible to return in 2015.
