Depleted Scarlet Raiders Fall To William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ – Minus its top two players, Rutgers-Newark was overwhelmed by William Paterson, 72-47, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in the WPU Rec Center.

Freshman guard Jamie Cejour-Mobley paced the Scarlet Raiders with a career-high 14 points but the Pioneers (12-9, NJAC 9-5) generated 33 points off of 27 turnovers while leading wire-to-wire.  Sophomore guard Arianna Williams notched a game-high seven assists, scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds and came up with four steals for Rutgers-Newark.

The Raiders (9-11, NJAC 5-9) played without junior forward Jade Howard (ankle sprain) and senior guard ShaQuanna Marshall (career-ending knee surgery) who fueled a 70-60 win in The Golden Dome on December 7 in the first meeting of the season between the teams.  Howard tallied 24 points and 13 rebounds while Marshall contributed 15 points, five steals and four assists in the December game.

Tonight, freshman forward Adayshia McKinnon came off the bench to haul down a team-high eight rebounds and freshman center Jasmine Lombard worked inside for nine points and five rebounds for the Raiders who have lost five of their last seven games.

Junior forward Ashley Marfo, who netted 17 points, and senior guard Floriana Borova, who added 16, combined to make 13 of 18 shots from the floor and lift WPU's field goal percentage to 36.2 (25-69) for the game.  Freshman forward Ariana Gomez came off the bench for a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.  Senior forwards Dana Jeter and Brittany Ennis combined to pull down 17 rebounds as the Pioneers controlled the boards, 60-41.

Marfo scored five of the first seven points as WPU jumped out to a quick 7-0 start and led 36-21 at the break.

Rutgers-Newark host The College of New Jersey Saturday night in an NJAC doubleheader in The Golden Dome Arena.  The women's game tips off at 6 with the men to follow at 8.
