TCNJ Rallies Past Scarlet Raiders, 70-48

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark jumped out to an early lead, but The College of New Jersey rallied for a 70-48 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in The Golden Dome Arena.

Junior forward Jade Howard netted six of her team-high 14 points as the Scarlet Raiders went up 17-9 in the early going, but the Lions did not buckle.  Rutgers-Newark led by eight twice more before TCNJ senior guard Tiffany DeTulio fueled a 21-2 run over the final seven minutes of the period with nine of her 16 points to stake the visitors to a 36-25 lead at the break.

Senior forward Jasmine Daniels totaled eight points with a team-high six rebounds for the Raiders while freshman guard Shala Glenn finished with six points and a pair of steals.  Junior guard Courtney Woodard chipped in four points, three rebounds, a team-high three assists and two steals for Rutgers-Newark while centers Sharee Gordon and Jasmine Lombard came off the bench to score four points apiece.

Senior guard Kelly Roddy notched game highs of 20 points and seven rebounds for the Lions while adding four assists.  Senior center Liz West went five for five from the field to finish with 10 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.  Junior forward Jessica Goldbach came off the bench for seven points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.

In the second half, the Lions pulled away to lead by as many as 26 points.

TCNJ (15-6, NJAC 11-3) maintained its hold on second place in the NJAC standings with its fourth consecutive victory.  The Lions are in second place in the 10-team league behind Montclair State (20-2, NJAC 14-1) and are battling to earn an opening round bye in the NJAC Championship Tournament.

The Raiders (9-12, NJAC 5-10) slipped closer to elimination from the 6-team playoff, trailing sixth place Richard Stockton (9-12, NJAC 6-8) by two games in the loss column with just three left on the regular-season slate.

Rutgers-Newark visits Ramapo on Wednesday for an NJAC doubleheader in the Bradley Center.  The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30.
