NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark rolled past Baruch College, 9-1 and 10-0, in a non-conference doubleheader on Alumni Field to up its season record to 9-9.

IN THE OPENING GAME, senior catcher Gabby Spinella and senior first baseman Liane Drastal each collected three hits to highlight a 12-hit attack in the first of two 5-inning mercy rule decisions.  Spinella delivered the RBI double in the first inning and scored on a single by Drastal to stake the Scarlet Raiders to an early 2-run lead.  Spinella also singled and score on a Drastal single in the 3-run fourth inning and stroked the game-ending RBI single to left center field with one away and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.

Drastal went three for three with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Rookie designated player Anna Carlson belted a double and scored in the third and hammered a towering solo home run over the left center field fence to ignite the 3-run fourth.

Junior third baseman Toniann Donde singled to start the game and scored the first run before belting an RBI double to left center field in the second.

Senior lefthander Brianna Alicchio (3-3) allowed just one run on three singles in the second inning before settling in to limit the Bearcats (0-2) to five hits while walking no one and striking out eight.  A first inning double by junior shortstop Jacqueline Gioia and a 2-out triple by sophomore second baseman Christina Chin were the only extra base hits allowed by Alicchio.

IN THE NIGHTCAP, freshman righthander Katie Boyd (4-4) and sophomore reliever Jess Cannon shared an abbreviated shutout behind an early offensive explosion by the Raiders.  Boyd allowed just three singles while striking out two and walking three during the first three innings when Rutgers-Newark powered out to a 9-0 lead.  Cannon came on to yield only a walk while facing just seven batters in two full innings of relief.

Spinella, Carlson, Boyd and senior shortstop Tiara Santi notched two hits apiece to pace the Raiders' 14-hit attack.

The Raiders exploded out of the box with five runs on five hits after an inning-opening error by Baruch.  Carlson had an RBI double while Spinella, Drastal and Boyd each delivered run-scoring singles before Donde walked with the bases loaded to end the spree.

Boyd had an RBI single to cap a 2-run second inning while Donde and Carlson both doubled and scored as the Raiders added two more runs in the third.  Santi singled home the final Rutgers-Newark run in the fourth.

Senior Olivia Auman (0-2) pitched the entire twin bill for the Bearcats.

Rutgers-Newark opens its New Jersey Athletic Conference slate at William Paterson on Saturday.  The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. in the Pioneer Softball Park.
