Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark hammered out a dozen hits in game two to split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader with New Jersey City in the Gerrity Athletic Complex. After suffering a 3-0 loss in the opener, the Scarlet Raiders rebounded for an 11-3 victory in six innings.
IN GAME TWO, sophomore leftfielder
Krista Casale drove in four runs with a bases-loaded walk in the 4-run second inning, a 2-run single in the fifth and an RBI single in the 5-run sixth to spark the Raiders (10-18, NAJC 1-9).
Freshman centerfielder
Eleni Lutas went three for three with a 2-run double in the sixth and joined Casale and senior first baseman
Liane Drastal with two runs scored. Sophomore rightfielder
Kelsey Lucas scored three times for the Raiders while notching two hits. Junior third baseman
Toniann Donde singled twice and drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded walk in the second and a single in the sixth.
Senior catcher
Gabby Spinella and Drastal laced back-to-back doubles to ignite the Raiders' sixth inning outburst. A 2-out bunt single by Lucas set the stage for Lutas's double ahead of RBI singles by Casale and Donde to push the Rutgers-Newark lead to eight.
Sophomore
Jess Cannon (3-4) picked up the win by scattering eight hits while walking no one and striking out two after a shaky start. She gave up back-to-back solo home runs to senior catcher Marissa Bariso and senior second baseman Maxine Kaminski with two away in the first inning. Freshman Yaquelin Iglesias singled to open the second inning ahead of a triple by junior pitcher Taylor Setar.
IN GAME ONE, the Raiders were shut out for the fourth time this season as junior lefthander Ashley Latushko (4-11) limited Rutgers-Newark to five singles.
Donde, Spinella, Drastal, Lucas and Lutas posted the Raider hits.
The Gothic Knights (5-23, NJAC 1-9) scored all of their runs in the fifth on a double, two singles, a hit batter and an error. The winning run came home on an obstruction call following a double down the left field line by senior centerfielder Casey Perez.
Freshman
Katie Boyd (4-8) took the loss despite yielding just five hits in 4-2/3 innings. She struck out four and walked five before giving way to Cannon who got a pop up to the shortstop to leave the bases loaded in the fifth before striking out the side the in the sixth.
Rutgers-Newark is at Cedar Crest on Monday at 4 p.m. for a non-conference twin bill before taking on Ramapo College in Mahwah on Tuesday at 3 o'clock in an NJAC doubleheader.
