Alicchio, Raiders Edged In Opener In NJAC Loss To Rowan

RUTGERS-NEWARK SOFTBALL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWARK, NJ – Senior lefthander Brianna Alicchio lost a pitchers' duel to Rowan senior ace Krysti Maronski in the opener of a 2-1 and 13-3 New Jersey Athletic Conference sweep for the Profs on Alumni Field.

IN THE OPENER, Alicchio (4-6) scattered seven hits without a strikeout or a walk and matched Maronski (16-3) in shutout innings after each yielded a run in the first inning.  Maronski struck out nine and walked one.  An unearned run in the sixth gave Rowan (28-8, NJAC 11-3) the win as the Raiders fell by a single run in an NJAC game for the fifth time this season.

After Rowan pushed across a run in the top of the first on a pair of singles, a fly ball to left field and a squeeze bunt by junior second baseman Alysa Romero, the Raiders leveled the score in the bottom of the inning.

Junior Toniann Donde led off the Raider first with a walk and moved to third on a line drive double off the left field fence by freshman third baseman Anna Carlson.  A ground ball to second by senior catcher Gabby Spinella plated Donde, but Carlson was stranded on third when Maronski coaxed a pop up to end the threat.

In the sixth, Romero reached second to lead off the inning when her fly ball was dropped in the outfield.  She was bunted to third by Maronski before junior centerfielder Shannon Costello slapped the game-winning hit through the left side.

Freshman centerfielder Eleni Lutas and sophomore leftfielder Krista Casale each reach first on an error and stole second – in the second and fifth innings, respectively – to post the only other threats against Maronski.

Rowan freshman third baseman Damariz Mercado was the only player in the game with two hits.

IN GAME TWO, Rowan piled up five runs on eight hits in the first two innings to chase Raider freshman starter Katie Boyd.  Down 6-0 in the fourth inning, the Raiders staged a 3-run rally before the Profs ran off the final seven runs of the game.

A single to right center field by senior first baseman Liane Drastal, a bunt single by sophomore Kelsey Lucas and a walk to sophomore second baseman Vannessa Romero loaded the bases with no one out for the Raiders in the fourth.  Lutas hit a soft roller to third which should have resulted in an easy force at the plate, but the Mercado threw late to first to bring in the first run.  Relief pitcher Jess Cannon lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Lucas before Donde brought in the final run on a fielder's choice ground ball to the shortstop.

Lucas was the only Raider with two hits.

Senior leftfielder Jennifer Arcella went four for five with four runs scored, four RBIs, a double and a pair of stolen bases to pace the Profs' 18-hit outburst against three Raider pitchers.

Rutgers-Newark (12-22, NJAC 1-13) host The College of New Jersey (8-22, NJAC 2-12) on Senior Day on Tuesday at 3 p.m. on Alumni Field.  Alicchio, Drastal, Spinella, shortstop Tiara Santi and outfielder Tina Zaggia and Sadie Logozio will be playing their final home games in Scarlet & Black.
