CAMDEN, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark suffered its sixth 1-run loss in New Jersey Athletic Conference play in the opening game of a 2-1 and 8-2 season-ending doubleheader loss to Rutgers-Camden in the RUC Community Park.

The Scarlet Raiders (12-26, NJAC 1-17) out-hit the Scarlet Raptors (17-14-1, NJAC 9-9), 20-15, in the twin bill.  Rutgers-Newark fell to Montclair State, William Paterson twice, Kean, Rowan and Rutgers-Camden by one run during a frustrating spring.

IN GAME ONE, a 2-out double to left center field by sophomore leftfielder Krista Casale plated sophomore second baseman Vannessa Romero, who was aboard after stroking a single, to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Romero doubled in the sixth to join senior rightfielder Tina Zaggia with two hits apiece to fuel Rutgers-Newark's 9-hit assault.  But Zaggia was stranded at third in the fifth and seventh innings by sophomore righthander Brittany Scott (15-12).  Scott hurled all 14 innings for the Raptors who earned a slot in the 6-team NJAC Championship Tournament.

Sophomore centerfielder Lindsay Day tripled to lead off the bottom of the second and scored on a single through the right side of the infield by sophomore third baseman Katie Larson to knot the game.

In the third, senior catcher Tabby Dick led off with a double before Scott singled in the winning run.

Dick was the only Rutgers-Camden player to get two hits against hard-luck loser Jess Cannon (3-6) who gave up just five hits and no walks while striking out three for the Raiders.

IN GAME TWO, freshman third baseman Anna Carlson belted a solo home run in the first inning and the Raiders strung together three singles in the fifth for their runs, but the Raptors erupted for four runs on five hits in the first inning to tilt the odds.

Senior shortstop Tiana Santi, Carlson and senior catcher Gabby Spinella delivered consecutive 1-out singles in the fifth to cut the Raiders' deficit to 4-2 before Rutgers-Camden countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the momentum.

Spinella went three for four in her final game in Scarlet & Black to pace the Raiders' 11-hit attack.

Freshman Katie Boyd (5-12) took the loss, giving up seven runs on just eight hits against the opportunistic Raptors.

Scott struck out seven and walked no one to off-set the Rutgers-Newark hit total.
