Box Score ATLANTA, GA – Rutgers University-Newark could not hold onto a halftime lead over host Emory University, falling 3-2 in the final match of the Sonny Carter Invitational.
The start of the match was delayed for nearly two hours by lightning storms which swept through the city forcing cancellation of the Centre College and Covenant College contest which was supposed to open the day on Emory's Woodruff Physical Education Center Field.
A loose-ball putaway by Eagle senior forward Dylan Price with 7:11 left broke a 2-2 deadlock and ended a scoring drought of nearly 35 minutes in the battle.
First-half goals by senior forward
Patryk Dawidczyk and sophomore midfielder
Hubert Dul staked the Scarlet Raiders (0-2-0) to a 2-1 advantage. All of the first-half tallies came during a span of 3:06 with Dawidczyk and Dul wrapping Raider goals around a marker by Eagle sophomore midfielder Max Gomas.
Senior midfielder
Diego Moraes and Dul put together two quick passes to find Dawidczyk at the top of the box for the first goal at 22:51. Just a minute and 10 seconds later, Gomas hammered a shot past Raider junior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall after passes from junior midfielder Nick Schook and sophomore forward Jason Andrejchak to level the score. Sophomore forward
Charlie O'Connell sent a pass into the box for Dul's goal at 25:57 to end the scoring spurt.
The Eagles controlled play for the opening 20 minutes before Rutgers-Newark finished the half strongly. The Raiders held slim leads in shots, 5-4, and corner kicks, 2-1, at the break.
Broomall went down to the turf to handle a low, hard crossing pass from deep on the right side, but the ball popped out to Price who was waiting just to the junior goalkeeper's right. Price punched the uncontested game winner into the right side of the net.
Broomall and Emory junior goalkeeper Abe Hannigan each made a save in the opening 45 minutes. Broomall denied a shot by freshman midfielder Jason McCarthy just ahead of Dul's go-ahead goal. Hannigan stopped a header by O'Connell in the 35
th minute.
Emory junior forward Connor Curtin knotted the score less than three minutes into the second period, putting in a shot from inside the box after consecutive passes by Andrejchak and Price set the table.
The Eagles finished with an 11-7 edge in shots while the Raiders forged a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Newark travels to the Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. for a non-conference match.
