EWING, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark throttled The College of New Jersey's attack to run its win streak to seven with a 1-0 win to open its New Jersey Athletic Conference season.

The Scarlet Raiders (7-2-0, NJAC 1-0-0) allowed just six shots by the Lions (3-4-2, NJAC 0-1-0) and sophomore forward Charlie O'Connell netted the lone goal in the 18th minute as Rutgers-Newark notched its second straight shutout.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Broomall (6-2-0) needed just one second-half save to record his second shutout of the season.  The Raiders have three shutouts while limiting their other four opponents to one goal during their victory streak which dates back to August 30.

Seniors Diego Moraes and Pat Holliday spearheaded the dominating defensive effort, allowing Rutgers-Newark to pile up a 17-6 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore midfielder Dylan Elias sent a crossing pass into the box from the right endline to O'Connell who one-timed a shot into the right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season and his third game winner.

The Raiders peppered junior goalkeeper Maciej Libucha (1-3-1) with 10 shots on goal, but he kept things close with nine saves including six in the second period.

O'Connell put three of his five shots on goal while senior forward Raphael Araujo and sophomore midfielder Hubert Dul each forced Libucha to make two saves.  The Raiders were limited to a single goal for the first time since a 3-1 loss to Covenant College in their season opener.

Rutgers-Newark hosts St. Joseph's College LI at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the second half of a women's and men's doubleheader on Alumni Field.  The Raider women (4-3-1) battle Mount St. Vincent in the 5 o'clock opener.
