Box Score NEWARK, NJ – Senior forward
Raphael Araujo needed just over 22 minutes to post his second hat trick of the season as Rutgers University-Newark ran its winning streak to eight with a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's College LI on Alumni Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (8-2-0) outshot the Golden Eagles (3-7-0), 29-5, and forged a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks to notch their third straight shutout victory with junior
Matt Broomall (7-2-0) and sophomore
Baltej Singh splitting the shutout. Each goalkeeper made two saves while playing a full half each.
It marked the fifth 3-goal game for Araujo in two seasons at Rutgers-Newark and his sixth as a collegiate player when added to a hat trick at New Jersey City University during his sophomore year. It was the third time that the all-American has scored all three of his team's goals in a Raider victory.
Araujo put away a penalty kick in the ninth minute. He picked up a through pass into the middle from sophomore midfielder
Mark Pazmino, dribbled hard toward the right side of the box and fired a shot into the left side of the goal in the 17th minute.
He netted his 11th goal of the season just 22 minutes and five seconds into the half on a remarkably acrobatic effort. A somersalt throw in from the right side by sophomore midfielder
Zakaria Sodki was headed by Eagle freshman defender Jake Halfpenny who went up with sophomore forward
Charlie O'Connell on the right side. The header deflected toward the far post where Araujo got his right foot on the ball before it touched the turf and sent it past diving St. Joseph sophomore goalkeeper Avery Gomez just inside the left post.
The Raiders put 18 shots on goal in the contest with Gomez making 11 of his 15 saves in the second half to keep things close.
Since dropping its first two matches of the season in August in Atlanta, Rutgers-Newark has shut out four opponents and limited the other four to one goal to match the longest winning streak in program history. The Raiders reeled off eight straight wins after losing their first game last season on their way to a 17-6-1 record and their first NCAA Championship at-large berth.
Rutgers-Newark hosts New Jersey Athletic Conference foe Rowan (6-3, NJAC 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday on Alumni Field.
