Scarlet Raiders Take Two In Camden Behind Gordon

CAMDEN, NJ – Junior middle blocker Sharee Gordon paced Rutgers University-Newark to wins over Rutgers University-Camden and Delaware Valley College as the Scarlet Raiders surpassed their 2013 win total with 13 regular season matches left on the agenda.
 
Gordon posted match-high totals for points, kills and blocks in each contest as the Raiders (9-5, NJAC 1-2) outlasted Rutgers-Camden, 25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-10, and Delaware Valley, 25-17, 25-22, 25-18, to improve on last season's 8-16 finish.
 
IN THE OPENER, Gordon hammered down 16 kills and added four solo blocks plus a blocking assist for 20.5 points as Rutgers-Newark posted its first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the season.  She hit .394 (16 kills, three errors, 33 attacks) as the Raiders won their second 5-set match in four tries this season.
 
Freshman setter Nathalie Breining ran the Raider attack with 34 assists while adding five kills and eight digs.  Freshman outside hitter Karolina Kopacz finished with 11 kills and three of the Rutgers-Newark's seven aces.
 
Freshman libero Sue Riley also notched three aces while coming up with 25 digs.  Sophomore defensive specialist Kathy Hormaza contributed 15 digs as the Raiders came up with 83 in the marathon.  Freshman outside hitter Samantha Renfree chipped in six kills.
 
Junior middle hitter Sydney Allen paced the Scarlet Raptors (4-12, NJAC 0-3).
 
AGAINST DELAWARE VALLEY, Gordon hit .308 with 10 kills on 26 swings with just two errors while adding two solo blocks and a pair of blocking assists for 13 points.
 
Riley came up with 23 digs and Hormaza added 16 as the Raiders played solid defense despite yielding nine aces to the Aggies (1-11).  Hormaza added five kills to match Kopacz who totaled nine points by adding thee of Rutgers-Newark's five aces and a solo block.  Sophomore Tabitha Davis posted four kills while Breining totaled 24 assists.
 
Freshman middle hitter Maria Cameron and freshman opposite Taylor Klecan tallied seven kills and a service ace each to lead Delaware Valley.
 
Rutgers-Newark hosts New Jersey City in an NJAC match on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in The Golden Dome Arena.
