Box Score

HAVERFORD, PA – All-American forward Raphael Araujo exploded for three second-half goals and added an assist to rally Rutgers University-Newark to a 4-1 upset of No. 18 Scranton in the Jimmy Mills Tournament at Haverford College.

In a match that was delayed for more than two hours because of lightning in the area, the Scarlet Raiders (2-2-0) exploded in the second half to stun the Royals (2-1-0) who came into the match after having posted shutout victories in their  first two matches of the season.  Scranton made the NSCAA Top 25 list earlier this week.

The mercurial Araujo chalked up his fourth hat trick in two seasons with the Scarlet Raiders to give him four tallies in the last two matches.

The teams battled to a scoreless draw during the first half with each side taking five shots and a corner kick.  Raider junior goalkeeper Matt Broomall made three of his four saves in the opening period to keep things close.  Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Hintz stopped five shots for the Royals.

Scranton senior midfielder Rich Loeffler scored the first goal just four minutes and 10 seconds into the second half, but the Raiders answered by outshooting the Royals, 10-2, for the remainder of the match.  Rutgers-Newark piled up a 15-8 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore midfielder Hubert Dul fed Araujo for the leveling score in the 64th minute and the game winner in the 73rd minute.

Sophomore forward Charlie O'Connell headed a pass into Araujo in front of the net for the insurance goal in the 85th minute.  Araujo controlled the pass and sent the shot into the netting inside the far post.

Just over two minutes later, Araujo returned the favor by setting up O'Connell's second goal of the season with a crossing pass from the left side.  O'Connell netted the shot inside the far post.

It was the Raiders' second straight win after two losses to start the season.

The win was tempered by the Raiders' learning of the loss of senior midfielder Ardian Djeka for the rest of the season because of a broken leg suffered in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Merchant Marine Academy.

Rutgers-Newark takes on tournament host Haverford on Walton Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday.  The Fords (2-0) edged New Jersey Athletic Conference member William Paterson, 2-1, to open play in the 2-day affair.
