Men’s Soccer Plays to 0-0 Draw at Stockton

NJAC Standings

POMONA, N.J. (October 10, 2015)
– The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team played host Stockton University to a 0-0 draw Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest at G. Larry James Stadium.

Rutgers-Newark moves to 3-1-1 in the NJAC and 11-3-1 overall. Stockton is also 3-1-1 in the conference and goes to 10-3-1 overall.

With their 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Scarlet Raiders have now not allowed a single goal against for a remarkable 386:05 dating back to September 26. It spans 6:05 of a loss at Rowan, three shutout victories and the draw against the Ospreys.

In goal for nearly that entire time has been senior goalkeeper Matt Broomall. After him and his teammates struggled at Rowan, the defense has been excellent with four-straight shutouts and limiting overall chances for the opposition. The reigining NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, Broomall, made five saves in this one and has 13 in the streak.

On Saturday, each side put five shots on goal, with Stockton ending the game with a slim 14-13 edge in shots taken. Rutgers-Newark held a 4-3 margin in corners.

Junior Charlie O'Connell led R-N with two shots on target, with classmate Anthony DeRisi, sophomore Isaiah Kuris and sophomore Carlos Castro recording the others.

Senior Bobby Varga made five saves in goal for Stockton and  senior Jared Ruff led the Ospreys with two shots on goal.

Stockton had the run of the play in the early going, forcing Broomall to make two saves in the first 15 minutes, and O'Connell was the first Scarlet Raider to get off a shot (19:03), getting close on two bids in a span of a little more than five minutes.

R-N threatened with a corner and header from DeRisi in the 25th minute as the Raiders controlled the action late in the period.

The defenses tightened in the second half, with the Scarlet Raiders holding a 7-3 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes of regulation. Kuris was able to put his bid on goal directly following a corner but Varga was there for the denial, and Castro's attempt on goal came at 82:32.

The hosts held a 2-0 edge in shots in the first overtime with each team taking one in the second and neither side getting one on target in either of the extra periods.

Stockton runs its unbeaten streak to four matches, as do the Scarlet Raiders who have now gone 10-1-1 since a 1-2-0 start to the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts William Paterson in an NJAC battle on Alumni Field.
