NEWARK, N.J. (October 14, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team recorded its fifth-straight shutout Wednesday night, blanking visiting William Paterson University, 1-0, in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match on Alumni Field.
With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 12-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. William Paterson drops to 4-6-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Newark has now not allowed a goal in 476:05 of match time, spanning six matches and dating back to the latter parts of a game at Rowan University on September 26.
Senior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall has been in goal for all but 6:05 of the streak, making seven saves Wednesday to earn the victory.
Broomall made a brilliant save in the early going to keep the game scoreless. After an R-N shot, a punt and through-ball found its way to junior Musa Sackoon on a breakaway. Broomall played it aggressively, coming out hard and denying Sackoon's attempt. The veteran Pioneer who has 10 goals on the season was held at bay as the R-N defense did a nice job limiting chances for the prolific scorer.
Rutgers-Newark nearly came away with a goal less than three minutes later when junior
Anthony DeRisi's free kick from 28 yards out grazed the cross bar. DeRisi would get another chance on a free kick just 3:25 later following a Paterson yellow card at the top of the box. This time, DeRisi struck a perfect shot, placing the attempt into the upper-right for his fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 Scarlet Raider lead. He now has at least one point in three of the last four matches and four of six.
Broomall played another William Paterson run aggressively, coming out of the six-yard box to break up a pass on a counter, and the Scarlet Raiders nearly opened a 2-0 lead when sophomore
Chigozie Atubi played a pass back to junior
Dylan Elias whose shot sailed high from the top of the 18. Moments later R-N threatened again, this time on a lightning-quick counter that allowed freshman
Damjan Agaj a solid look at the top-left of the penalty area on a cross but his shot missed high, and the two teams went to the break with the scoreboard showing 1-0 in favor of the Raiders.
R-N had two strong chances in the first 1:19 of the second half, forcing WPU goalkeeper Nico Martirano to make a pair of saves – one on a header from junior
Charlie O'Connell and another on a shot from DeRisi.
Neither side had great chances in the second half, with Broomall breaking up a solid bid at the two-minute mark and the defense clearing the ball on the ensuing Paterson corner.
All match the Scarlet Raider defense played well with senior
Paul Tarnawski, freshman
Brandon Goldy, sophomore
Isaiah Kuris and junior
Dylan Elias making solid contributions. Sophomore midfielder
Arek Szoldrowski and junior midfielder
Adrian Mayorga also were very solid in the middle of the field throughout the match.
Rutgers-Newark finished the contest with a 14-11 edge in shots, while the Pioneers had a 3-1 margin in corners.
R-N will look to for another conference win Saturday when it visits Kean University at 7 p.m.
