UNION, N.J. (October 17, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team fell in overtime at Kean University Saturday night, 2-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at Kean Alumni Stadium.

The Cougars were able to net the game-winner 5:09 into the overtime period when Vaughn Cusano tallied on the only attempt for either team in the overtime period.

The Scarlet Raiders fall to 12-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference, while Kean improves to 5-1-0 in the conference and 14-2-0 overall.

NJAC Standings

A thrilling game from start-to-finish, Rutgers-Newark ended with a 20-14 margin in shots and an 8-7 edge in shots on target. Senior goalkeeper Matt Broomall made five saves in the loss, while his counterpart Chidi Iloka recorded seven denials. R-N ended the match with a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Kean stopped a lengthy streak in which Rutgers-Newark had not allowed a goal against 8:33 into the match. The Raiders had recorded five straight shutouts (4-0-1) and not allowed a tally in 484:38 of total game time dating back to September 26.

R-N pulled even with 2:53 left in the opening half on a set piece. Junior midfielder Dylan Elias lofted it into the box and sophomore back Isaiah Kuris headed it home. The goal was the second of the season for Kuris and it was the fourth assist for Elias.

The Scarlet Raiders nearly jumped in front with less than two minutes on the clock in the first as sophomore Chigozie Atubi had a header saved and rookie Damjan Agaj had a pair of shots just miss – one high and one wide.

Rutgers threatened in the 64th minute with a corner and two shots one after the other, but both were blocked to keep the game knotted at one. The Raiders continued to press generating five shots to none for Kean over a span of 26 minutes, with Broomall making a save at 82:41 to keep Kean at bay.

A corner followed by a header from sophomore Isaiah Kuris and a shot from junior Anthony DeRisi with a little more than a minute to play were both saved, and the two teams headed to overtime.

In the OT Kean attempted the only shot, scoring 5:09 in.

Rutgers-Newark will return to action when it hosts Stevens Institute of Technology in a key non-conference contest on Alumni Field Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
