NEWARK, N.J. (October 20, 2015) – Junior midfielder
Hubert Dul scored and senior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall made a monster save on a penalty kick as the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team improved to 13-4-1 with an upset win over 16th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
The win is the third of the year over a ranked opponent for the Scarlet Raiders as they defeated No. 19 Cortland and No. 18 The College of New Jersey in September.
The win snaps an 11-game unbeaten streak for the Ducks as they are now 11-2-2 overall. Rutgers-Newark was able to bounce back quickly after suffering a tough conference loss at Kean University Saturday, earning another signature victory to boost its NCAA Tournament profile.
The Scarlet Raiders scored at 40:55 during the latter stages of the first half on a set piece. Stevens was whistled for a foul outside the box about five yards off the near sideline and 12 yards off the endline. Junior
Dylan Elias stepped up and lofted a perfect service in front, and Dul was able to head the ball over the Stevens keeper into the upper-right of the cage for his first goal of the season. Elias picked up his fifth assist on the play.
Broomall totaled five saves in the match, with an absolute monster coming on a Stevens penalty kick 7:36 into the second half. The Raiders were whistled for a foul inside the right side of the box, giving the Ducks a golden opportunity to tie with a PK, but the R-N veteran left his feet, diving to his right to knock away what looked to be a solid strike and well-placed shot from the Stevens player.
Rutgers-Newark finished the match with an 11-9 edge in shots, putting five on goal. Stevens finished with a 5-2 margin in corners.
Both teams had chances in the first half go off the crossbar. A one-timer for Stevens hit hard off the crossbar on a volley, and junior
Anthony DeRisi had a hooking attempt on a free kick just miss, grazing off the top-right of the cage. A little more than four minutes after DeRisi's bid, junior
Charlie O'Connell almost gave the Raiders a lead again, but his header was stopped by Stevens goalie Mike Renna.
Rutgers-Newark will return to action Saturday night with an important New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match against rival Rutgers University-Camden on Alumni Field. R-N and the Scarlet Raptors are neck-and-neck in the NJAC standings, currently occupying fourth and fifth place, respectively. The top two seeds at the end of the regular season earn a bye in the NJAC Tournament, with seeds three and four hosting first round matches. Rutgers-Newark closes its regular-season slate with a game at NJAC foe Montclair State University on Wednesday October 28.
Saturday night's match will also be Senior Night for Rutgers-Newark.
