R-N falls to 4-3-1 in the conference and 13-5-1 overall, while Camden improves to 5-3-0 in the NJAC and 10-7-1 overall. The Scarlet Raiders are now sixth in the conference standings with 13 points, and the Scarlet Raptors are in fifth with 15, tied with Kean University and Rowan University. Montclair State University and Stockton University are in first and second.
R-N will battle Montclair Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in both team's regular-season finale. A Scarlet Raider victory would lock up an NJAC playoff berth.
NJAC Standings The Scarlet Raptors came out generating two corners and two shots in the early going, but senior goalkeeper
Matt Broomall made a save and played the corners aggressively as the Scarlet Raiders withstood the pressure and created a couple chances themselves.
Rutgers-Camden would jump out in front with a fortunate goal on a throw-in at 14:44. Sophomore Matt Welch launched a throw into the middle of the box, and freshman Darnell Brown's header went directly to senior Ramadan Bayyan who then headed it into the upper-right 90 for his first goal of the season and a Raptor lead.
Rutgers-Newark had a gorgeous opportunity with about 17 minutes to play in the first half. Junior
Sebastian Gostynski received a pass and connected on what looked to be a score, but goalkeeper James Brett made a fully extended save, also denying a rebound attempt off the foot of
Tyler Nowak with some help from his defense.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to dominate field position and possession, with junior
Hubert Dul coming about as close as you can without scoring on a one-timer from freshman
Damjan Agaj. Agaj controlled a deflected ball, and crossed from the end line to the top of the box to Dul who ripped a shot that Grant was able to make another horizontal save on.
R-N put six of its nine shots on target in the first half and held the Raptors without a shot for the final 30:16 of the half, but still trailed after one.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to press, generating a shot and corner in the opening moments of the second half and keeping the ball deep in the Camden zone for much of the action.
Senior Mike Ryan took the Raptors' first shot 5:07 into the second, with Newark coming back down to continue the pressure but still struggling to finish.
In the 73rd minute, a pair of corners and a header from
Isaiah Kuris nearly pulled the Raiders even, and three corners over 1:40 of game time around the 84th minute put a scare into the Raptors but did not result in a score and the match remained 1-0 in favor of the guests.
Camden scored an insurance goal late when Brett started a counter down the far sideline and Mike Ryan eventually scored his 17th of the season with 1:44 on the clock.
Rutgers-Newark ended with a 15-8 margin in shots, putting nine on goal, and the Scarlet Raiders also held a big 8-3 margin in corners. Broomall finished with three saves in the loss, while Brett totaled nine. R-C was also whistled for six yellow cards in the match, with five coming in the second half. R-N was whistled for one.
