St. Joe’s-L.I. Nips Women’s Volleyball in Five

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (October 21, 2015) – St. Joeseph's-Long Island earned a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team Wednesday night, overcoming a two-set deficit for the victory.

With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders fall to 10-13, while St. Joe's improves to 13-13. R-N won the first set, 25-22, and took the second, 25-11. SJC came back to win the third set, 25-20, the fourth set, 25-21, and the fifth and final set, 15-7.

Rutgers-Newark was slated to return to action Thursday in The Golden Dome Arena against Lehman College, but that match has been moved to next Thursday, October 29 at the request of Lehman.

The hosts outscored R-N 8-2 to start the fifth, and after cutting the lead to 8-3, St. Joe's did not allow the Raiders closer to win the match, 3-2.

Trailing 8-5 early in the first, Rutgers ripped off four quick points thanks in large part to a pair of aces from junior Tabitha Davis. The Scarlet Raiders turned a 14-12 edge to 19-12 on the serve of sophomore Nathalie Breining, getting four Eagle errors and a kill from freshman Jess Moy. St. Joe's battled back late within one (23-22), but a kill from freshman Cassie Luken and an Eagle error put the Raiders up 1-0.

The second set was never in doubt as Rutgers-Newark went on a 9-0 run off the bat, getting four aces from Breining, and two kills from Moy. After St. Joe's trimmed the lead to six (9-3), the Raiders continued to extend their margin, eventually settling on a 2-0 lead via a 25-11 tally.

The third set was back-and-forth early, and after 24 points it was tied at 12. St. Joe's went on a 5-0 run to open a solid working margin (17-12), and the Scarlet Raiders could get no closer than three the rest of the set.

St. Joe's forced a fifth set thanks in large part to a 4-0 run that transformed a 17-17 tie into a 21-17 lead as the Raiders were unable to come back.

Moy, Luken and Davis all had seven kills, with junior Kathy Hormaza chipping in six. Breining led the way with 28 assists, also picking up five of the team's nine aces. Sophomore Rebecca Ford had a huge game for the Scarlet Raiders with 10 blocks in the middle, as Moy (four), Davis (four) and Luken (three) were all solid as well. Sophomore Sue Riley had 23 digs, with Breining and Hormaza in double digits as well.

R-N hit .080 in the match and .227 in the second set, tallying 34 kills and 21 errors. The Raiders totaled 71 digs and 18 total blocks. St. Joe's had 54 kills, seven aces, five blocks and 85 digs.
