NEWARK, N.J. (October 3, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team won by shutout for the second-straight match, blanking visiting New Jersey City University by a score of 3-0 Saturday on Alumni Field.

R-N improves to 3-1-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and 10-3-0 overall, while the Gothic Knights drop to 0-4-0 in the conference and 1-10-0 overall. Rutgers-Newark has not allowed a goal against in the last 186:55 of game action.

After a slow start, junior Anthony DeRisi gave the Scarlet Raiders a 1-0 lead thanks to his third goal of the season at 17:19. Junior Sebastian Gostynski and freshman Damjan Agaj registered assists on the play. Gostynski possessed the ball in the middle of the field before playing it wide to Agaj who was streaking down the far sideline. Agaj chased the ball down and delivered a perfect cross to DeRisi who was positioned perfectly in the middle of the box for a header directed into the lower-left corner of the goal.

About eight minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders nearly made it a 2-0 game when DeRisi fed junior Tyler Nowak in the box, but his left-footed shot went wide.

NJCU took one shot in the half that Scarlet Raider goalkeeper Matt Broomall was able to stop as the hosts took the 1-0 edge into the locker room.

The Scarlet Raiders had a chance in the opening moments of the second half when Agaj's bid from 25 yards out hammered the crossbar, and moments later Nowak recieved a cross but his sliding shot went inches wide.

Sophomore Alex Torres and junior Sebastian Gostynski nearly connected for a gorgeous give-and-go goal, but Gothic Knight goalkeeper John Riggs came out to make the save – one of seven in the match

Freshman Timothy Farias was responsible for the Scarlet Raiders' second brace of the game, giving his team some insurance with 8:11 on the clock. The rookie took a high-arching cross in the right corner from Dul, made a move to beat a defender and delivered a low-rip in the right corner for his third of the season. Dul was credited with his third assist.

The final Rutgers-Newark goal of the afternoon came at 85:48 and was the second of the match for DeRisi. After a corner, the ball caromed out to DeRisi who ripped a shot from 15-yards away and put it in the left corner.
