Men’s Soccer Earns Shutout Win at FDU

MADISON, N.J. (October 7, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team continued to roll Wednesday, earning a 3-0 shutout at FDU-Florham.

With the win the Scarlet Raiders improve to 11-3-0 overall. FDU drops to 5-5-1.

R-N has now won its last three matches, recording shutouts in all three and outscoring the opposition 7-0. The Scarlet Raiders have not allowed a goal against over the last 276:05 of game time and have won 10-of-11 since starting 1-2-0.

Rutgers-Newark will look to continue its strong play on Saturday when it visits New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Richard Stockton. The Raiders and Ospreys are currently tied in the conference standings at 3-1-0.

R-N dominated this one from start to finish, applying consistent pressure and scoring once in the first half and twice in the second. The Raiders finished with a 23-9 margin in shots, out-shooting the hosts 10-5 in the first and 13-4 in the second.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Broomall made four saves to pocket the shutout, and the Scarlet Raiders finished the action with a 4-2 margin in corner kicks as well.

After allowing a shot 3:40 into the game, the Scarlet Raiders took control, not allowing another attempt for 29:30 and taking a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on an unassisted tally from junior Dylan Elias. The tally was his second of the season and went down as his first game-winner, becoming the eighth Rutgers-Newark player with multiple goals this season in the process.

R-N continued to apply pressure, eventually taking a 2-0 lead on a score from reigning NJAC Rookie of the Week Damjan Agaj. Junior Anthony DeRisi – who now has points in three of the last four matches – brought the ball in the left side of the box before sending a low cross to Agaj who knocked home his second goal of the year. The assist was the first of 2015 for DeRisi.

The Raiders sealed the victory with 8:57 left, getting an insurance brace from junior Sebastian Gostynski. Classmate Hubert Dul set Gostynski up to beat a defender off the dribble before beating the Devil goalkeeper.
