GLASSBORO, N.J. (October 6, 2015) – Rowan University defeated Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 3-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match.
With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders drop to 9-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Raiders will host a tri-match with SUNY Martime and Baruch College Saturday in The Golden Dome Arena starting at 11 a.m. Rowan improves to 9-11 overall and 3-2 in the NJAC.
The set scores were 25-22, 25-21 and 25-14.
The Scarlet Raiders hit .132 in the match compared to .144 for the Profs. Rowan held a 43-23 edge in total kills, also ending plus-41 in total attacks (132-91). R-N delivered six aces and picked up 53 digs as a team.
A trio of Raiders finished with a team-high six kills in freshman

Cassie Luken (.500) and senior
Sharee Gordon (.286). Sophomore

Kathy Hormaza and Luken each had a pair of aces, with Breining, Luken and Gordon tallying two blocks apiece. Breining led the way with 21 assists, with junior

Sue Riley (11) and Hormaza (10) all registering double-digit digs.
Freshman Dalton Sanchez finished with a match-high 11 kills to lead Rowan and three players tallied double-digit digs.
Rowan 25, R-N 22The Scarlet Raiders raced out to a 4-0 lead propelled by a Breining ace and Gordon kill, and they extended the lead to seven (8-1) following another Gordon hammer. Rowan cut the lead to one at 10-9, but a 4-0 run from the Raiders thanks to Hormaza's serve and kills from Moy and Luken made it 14-9.
Rowan fought back to tie things at 15, eventually opening a 19-16 edge. The Scarlet Raiders came back with back-to-back kills from Moy and Hormaza, but could not get over the hump the rest of the way.
Rutgers-Newark hit a match-best .195 in the first set, tallying a match-high 10 kills as well.
Rowan 25, R-N 21It was the Profs who jumped out to an early lead in the second set, opening an 11-6 margin and forcing a Scarlet Raider timeout.
Coming out of the break, Rutgers erupted on an 8-2 rally to open a 14-13 lead. Luken served the Raiders to the final four points, working in a pair of aces.
R-N would lead at 15-14 after one of Gordon's six kills, but the hosts responded with a run of their own to take control of the set and open a 2-0 lead in the match.
Rowan 25, R-N 14The Profs overpowered the Scarlet Raiders in the third set by scoring seven of the first eight points. The Raiders ran off three in a row behind a kill from Davis and the serve of freshman
Analis Capobianco, but could not get closer than three.
Another 3-0 spurt cut a 12-6 deficit to 12-9, but Rowan had the answer, scoring 13 of the final 18 points in the match.
