NEWARK, N.J. (November 23, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team will look to open its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) slate with a win in The Golden Dome Arena Tuesday night when it hosts rival New Jersey City University (NJCU).
Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m., and the Scarlet Raiders are hoping to snap a two-game skid after a win in the 2015-16 season-opener last Saturday.
Despite a pair of losses, Rutgers-Newark gave St. John Fisher College all it could handle in a one-point loss on November 15, and it hung tough with a strong Connecticut College squad Saturday night in New London, Conn.
R-N has been led by a trio of veteran guards throughout the young 2015-16 season as junior
Maria Simmons, senior
Arianna Williams and junior
Shala Glenn are all averaging double figures and more than 38 minutes per game.
Simmons has been spectacular, averaging 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 4.3 steals per game, truly doing it all for the Scarlet Raiders. She is shooting 46.8 percent from the field, most recently scoring a career-high 27 points Saturday. Williams is averaging 14.7 points per game, snaring a team-high 7.7 rebounds and also dishing out 4.0 assists. The senior standout has tallied six thefts and is leading the team with three blocked shots. Glenn is averaging 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals, scoring a season-high 16 points on 8-for-14 shooting in Saturday's game against the Camels.
The Scarlet Raiders defeated NJCU twice last season, earning a 12-point win in Jersey City and a 52-38 victory in The Golden Dome Arena en route to a 9-9 NJAC record and a berth in the conference tournament.
Rutgers-Newark has won the last 10 meetings between the two conference and geographic rivals dating back to a 72-50 victory on December 1, 2010.
NJCU will bring a record of 1-2 into Tuesday's conference opener. The Gothic Knights dropped both contests in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic in Newark before earning a 61-47 road win at Cairn University Saturday. Deseree Johnson and Jazz Randall lead NJCU, averaging 13.0 and 9.3 points per game, respectively. Johnson is averaging a double-double with 10.3 rebounds per game.
