Maria Simmons of the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week, it was announced Monday afternoon.

Simmons has been playing splendidly since the start of the 2015-16 season and currently leads the NJAC in scoring, averaging 22.8 points per game, and assists, handing out 7.3 per contest. She is No. 11 in rebounds (7.0) and No. 2 in steals (17).

Last week, Simmons propelled the Scarlet Raiders to a dominating 86-65 win over New Jersey City University in the team's NJAC opener in The Golden Dome Arena. The third-year Scarlet Raider poured in a career-high 28 points on just 19 shots (11-for-19), dishing out 12 assists, grabbing seven rebound and tallying four steals.Â

Simmons is shooting a sparkling 50 percent (33-for-66) from the field, scoring 91 points in four games, also making 43.8 percent of her attempts from three-point range (7-for-16).

The Irvington native has scored at least 17 points in all four Scarlet Raider games, putting up career-highs in points on November 21 (27) and November 24 (28).

Rutgers-Newark (2-2 overall, 1-0 NJAC) hosts Purchase College Monday night in The Golden Dome Arena in a non-conference contest. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.Â
