Freshman Yusko has memorable debut in R-N's 10-0 win over Old Westbury

Freshman pitcher Kelly Yusko fired a one-hitter and had two HR and six RBI in the 10-0 win over Old Westbury

Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Freshman pitcher Kelly Yusko (Portage, PA/Penn Cambria) had a memorable collegiate debut, firing a one-hitter while striking out five, and went 3-for-3 with two homers and six RBI, leading the Rutgers-Newark softball team to a 10-0 victory over the College of Old Westbury at the Rainball Classic Sunday morning.

The Scarlet Raiders won their opener in impressive fashion, then dropped a tough 15-0 decision to Virginia Wesleyan at the tournament later Sunday.

In the season opener, Yusko breezed through the Old Westbury lineup, allowing just a single to Alexis Ferrero.

The Scarlet Raiders also received solid play from freshman catcher Sam Held (Maywood, NJ/Paramus Catholic). Held had two hits, including a homer, scored two runs and had an RBI. Sophomore infielder Anna Carlson (Jefferson Township, NJ/Jefferson) had two hits and two RBI while scoring a run. Senior infielder Toniann Donde (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) had one hit, scored two runs and added an RBI for the winners.

In the nightcap, Virginia Wesleyan pounded out 23 hits against two Scarlet Raider pitchers. Courtney Bogan and Kayla Dost had three hits and three runs scored each to pace the winners.

The Scarlet Raiders could manage just one hit, a single from freshman infielder Kayla Gallo (Oxford, NJ/Warren Hills).

The Scarlet Raiders return to action in the tournament Monday with two scheduled games.
