Yusko heroics give Scarlet Raiders South Carolina sendoff

Freshman pitcher Kelly Yusko smacked a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to get the Scarlet Raiders an 8-7 win over Albright
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Freshman pitcher Kelly Yusko (Portage, PA/Penn Cambria) belted a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, capping a thrilling three-run rally, leading Rutgers-Newark to an 8-7 victory over Albright College Thursday at the Snowbird Classic.

The victory capped a successful week at the tournament, as the Scarlet Raiders returned home with a 6-4 record. The Scarlet Raiders also lost to Arcadia University, 12-0, in the final day.

In the victory, the Scarlet Raiders entered the final frame, trailing 7-5. With two outs, junior centerfielder Kelsey Lucas (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) singled and came around to score on an error. Sophomore third baseman Anna Carlson (Jefferson Township/Jefferson) then singled and Yusko delivered the game-winning homer, her third roundtripper of the tournament.

Yusko scattered 11 hits, allowed all seven runs and struck out four to earn her third victory of the tourney.

Earlier in the game, the Scarlet Raiders scored four runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by senior first baseman Toniann Donde (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) and a solo homer from freshman shortstop Kayla Gallo (Oxford, NJ/Warren Hills).

Gallo and Lucas had two hits each for the winners.

Regina Millburn had two hits, including a homer, and two RBI and Armida Roman had a homer and two RBI for Albright (5-1).

The Scarlet Raiders managed just three hits in the loss to Arcadia. Gallo, Carlson and losing pitcher Jess Cannon (Newton, NJ/Newton) each had a single, as Nicki Larro had three hits and five RBI for the winners.

The Scarlet Raiders' scheduled doubleheader with Swarthmore in Pennsylvania Saturday was postponed due to the snow. They are scheduled to open their home schedule Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Brooklyn College.
