Alvernia Blanks Baseball in Non-Conference Action

NEWARK, N.J. (April 14, 2015) – The Rutgers-Newark baseball suffered a 6-0 shutout at the hands of Alvernia University Tuesday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium in Newark.

With the loss, R-N falls to 9-19 on the season. Alvernia improves to 22-8 with the victory.

The story of the game for the Scarlet Raiders was freshman reliever Mike Zibrin. The rookie came on in the fourth inning and tossed 4.0 beautiful frames for the hosts, scattering three hits, walking none and striking out a pair to give his team a chance to come back.

The Scarlet Raiders recorded eight hits in the game and reached five times via walk, but left 11 men on base and struck out eight times. Freshman catcher Justin Marks was 2-for-4, and senior third baseman Nick Gencarelli was 2-for-3 with a walk. Pinch hitters Dan Lopez and Alexander Duca each went 1-for-1 with junior shortstop Gerry Patrizio and junior center fielder Ryan MacFarlane pocketing the other Rutgers-Newark hits. MacFarlane and junior first baseman Chas Bohannon each added a stolen base for R-N.

Nick Liaci, Louis Marotta, Tim Carfrey, Jarden Degler and Kevin Becker-Menditt combined for the Alvernia shutout with Marotta earning the win behind 3.2 scoreless innings of work. He allowed three hits and struck out three.

Alvernia scored two runs in the second and three more in the third to open a 5-0 lead and chase R-N freshman starter JR Hilcher (2-2). Backstop James Bertolotti led the Crusaders, going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, with center fielder Vinny Case, right fielder Ben Sawyer and designated hitter Chris Burns all picking up multiple hits in what was a 12-hit attack.

Rutgers-Newark threatened in the bottom of the second as Bohannon and MacFarlane reached with one out and then executed a double-steal to get into the scoring position. However, a pair of strikeouts quieted the Rutgers momentum.

Three walks loaded the bases with two out in the fourth inning but Marotta was able to get a big out after coming on in relief to end the final major threat for Rutgers-Newark.

Rutgers-Newark will return to action Thursday when it hosts William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
